About The Speaker
John Scanlan is the Director of Research Commercialisation at Maynooth University, Ireland, leading a team that focuses on exploiting technologies via spin-out company formation and licensing to existing companies, building partnerships with industry and developing a culture of market-informed research.
Prior to joining Maynooth, John was CTO of Straatum a software and hardware supplier to the semiconductor industry with responsibility for IP, product development, partnership and strategic marketing. Straatum spun out from his PhD thesis and was sold to Lam Research in California. He also worked for Applied Materials in Edinburgh and California for several years in technology and business development / marketing leadership roles and he has worked in Europe, Asia and USA.
John the inaugural chair of Irish Knowledge Transfer and Innovation Group, the organisation of Irish technology transfer professionals and was also part of the Innovation Taskforce intellectual property implementation team appointed by the Irish Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation to develop a National IP Protocol.
John is an inventor on seven patent families, is the author of a book chapter in “Biotech Manager’s Handbook: A Practical Guide”, is the author of 13 referred publications, and has five published articles on innovation / economic development. He has consulted to several public entities on innovation and commercialisation. He is an evaluator of commercialistion and research projects for the European Commission (FP7 and H2020).
